About the artist

Mykola Pymonenko (Ukrainian, 1862 – 1912) was a Ukrainian realist painter born in 1862 just outside Kiev in the village Priorka. His work focused primarily on depicting 19th century contemporary life of both urban and rural working class, capturing the various everyday rituals of the Ukrainian people. Since his death in 1912, Pymonenko has become synonymous with the rise of Ukrainian fine art and can be found in numerous public collections worldwide, including the Louvre, National Art Museum of Ukraine and Odessa Fine Art Museum, to name a few.
Michael Clarkson Webb has generously donated this painting which has been in his family for well over a century since it was purchased directly from the artist in 1901-1902.
